The Mighty Several and, as with much of Paul Heaton's recent work, largely finished during cycling breaks in a village north of Amsterdam,
Jenius was recorded at Manchester's Blueprint Studios in early 2026, right as his ten-year marriage was ending. None of that turmoil surfaces directly in the songs themselves, which Heaton had alreadybegun before the split, but he's said the sessions became a genuine refuge, a chance to be around friends and bandmates rather than dwell on what was happening at home. Jonny Lexus, who's worked with Heaton since 2010's
Acid Country, earned eight co-writing credits here and helped arrange further tracks, while producer
Ian Broudie, returning from
The Mighty Several, continues a working relationship Heaton describes as instinctive: Broudie "understands where I want to get to" without either of them needing to over-explain it. Guest vocalists
